Guitar Tuition FAQs

Where are Leeds Guitar Lessons held?

I teach at my dedicated teaching room in Burley, Leeds LS4. There is plenty of free street parking, and good public transport links. I also teach students anywhere in the world via Skype.

Can you come to my home for lessons?

I do offer home visits – I charge for travel time at my hourly rate. Use the post code LS4 2DZ and Google driving directions to calculate approximate travel times. If you want to learn from home, but don’t want to spend anything extra, I can still teach quality lessons via Skype. Skype lessons can be recorded, and can be just as effective as lessons in person.

Do you teach children?

Yes, I have students as young as 7. For younger students, I recommend a shorter 30 minute lesson each week. As well as songs, these lessons will also involve musical games, finger ‘gym’, and listening activities. I have taught in primary schools, and have completed a course for Child Protection in Education (Music). Parents are welcome to sit in on the lesson. I have Wi-Fi, charging points, and free Tea & Coffee.

Do you teach beginners?

Of course, many of my students were taught right from the beginning, with no previous musical knowledge whatsoever. I believe that anyone can learn with the right knowledge and regular practice. It’s a good idea to get help early on, so you can save yourself lots of time and frustration.

What will I learn as a beginner?

Warm-ups, tuning, basic songs, posture, rhythm, basic theory, ear training, key guitar skills, and ways to practise are all covered. You can enjoy learning the basics of guitar using techniques in a friendly and supportive atmosphere – and we’ll play songs by your favourite artists wherever possible.

How often do I need guitar lessons?

Most of my students take a lesson each week, with some learning twice a week, and some taking lessons fortnightly. Advanced students may only need one-off lessons. The frequency of lessons is totally up to you. I’m more than happy to work around your current work, family and social life to find a time for our guitar lessons that works best for the both of us.

What’s the best guitar to buy for a beginner?

There’s no one-size-fits-all guitar – everyone has different tastes, dimensions, and price ranges to consider. My first guitar was from a car boot sale for £30, but I soon grew out of it. Make a trip to your local guitar shop, and ask for some advice. They should be able to give you some demonstrations, and let you try the guitar for size and feel. Be wary of cheap guitars as they could have playability issues, and could be uncomfortable to play.

I’ve been playing for some time. How can you help me?

In the free phone call we will look at your current situation, and how you can move forward. Lessons might be based around more challenging songs, or other topics like Theory or Improvisation. The clearer you are about your own goals, the more productive our sessions will be.

Does Chris guide students through guitar grades?

I can guide students through Rockschool, Trinity Rock & Pop, or RGT Grades on Acoustic or Electric guitar. I have a 100% pass rate record for my students. Grades can be a good framework for learning, although I don’t view them as essential. I also offer real-world experiences, like student concerts and recording sessions.

How long will it take me to learn the guitar?

This is difficult to answer, as it at depends on so many variables – like how much time you put into practising, how dextrous your hands are, what level you are aiming for, and so on. The most important thing is to be consistent with playing at home, as this is where the real learning takes place.

Do I need to buy a book?

Your lesson materials will be provided at each lesson as high quality printouts. You will need to get a folder to keep things organised, and bring it to every lesson. I have a large library of handouts created over years of private teaching. Below are examples of sheets I have created for other students. I can figure out a song during the lesson time, but it’s better if you request a song at least a few days beforehand, so I have time to learn the song and prepare your printouts. I can also provide photos, video, and audio if you prefer not to read music.
