Where does Chris teach?
Chris teaches at his dedicated teaching room in Burley, Leeds. He also teaches in schools in Leeds and to students anywhere in the world via Skype.
Can Chris come to my home for lessons?
Chris can no longer offer home visits, as his schedule is too full to fit in extra travel time. If you have accessibility needs, or just want to learn from home, Chris can still teach quality lessons via Skype. Skype lessons can be recorded, and can be just as effective as lessons in person.
Does Chris teach children?
Chris has taught children as young as 7, and loves making lessons fun. For younger students, lessons will involve musical games, finger gym, and creative tasks. He holds a full enhanced DBS check (previously called a CRB check), and regularly teaches in primary schools.
Does Chris teach beginners?
Yes, Chris teaches both beginners and guitarists who have been playing for many years.
Can I purchase lessons for someone else?
Yes, Chris can create a printable e-voucher, to suit any budget. These make a great gift. Please confirm a lesson time with Chris before purchasing a voucher.
How long will it take me to learn the guitar?
This is difficult to answer, as it at depends on so many variables – like how much time you put into practising, how dextrous your hands are, what level you are aiming for, and so on. It takes some people longer than others. The most important thing is to commit to a regular practice routine.
What will I learn as a beginner?
Warm-ups, tuning, basic songs, posture, rhythm, basic theory, ear training, key guitar skills, and ways to practise are all covered. You can enjoy learning the basics of guitar using techniques in a friendly and supportive atmosphere – and we’ll play songs by your favourite artists wherever possible.
How often do I need guitar lessons?
Most of my students take a lesson each week, with a few students taking lessons fortnightly. The frequency of lessons is totally up to you. I’m more than happy to work around your current work, family and social life to find a time for our guitar lessons that works best for the both of us.
I don’t have my own guitar yet. Can I borrow one for lessons?
If you would like to borrow a guitar for your lesson, that’s absolutely fine, however you should have your own guitar to practise on between lessons. In the first lesson I can advise you on what you should be looking for.
What’s the best guitar to buy for a beginner?
There’s no one-size-fits-all guitar – everyone has different tastes, dimensions, and price ranges to consider. My first guitar was found at a car boot sale for £30, but I soon grew out of it. Make a trip to your local guitar shop, and ask for some advice. They should be able to give you some demonstrations, and let you try the guitar for size and feel. Be wary of cheap guitars as they could have playability issues.
I’ve been playing for some time. How can you help me?
In the introductory lesson we will look at your current situation, and how you can move forward. If you decide to continue with guitar tuition, I’ll create a personalised learning plan with clear steps on how to improve, while expanding your repertoire. Constant feedback is given to keep you on the right track.
Does Chris guide students through guitar grades?
Yes. Chris can guide students through the Rockschool, Trinity Rock & Pop, or RGT Grades on Acoustic or Electric guitar.
Do I need to buy a book?
Your lesson materials will be provided at each lesson as high quality printouts. You will need to get a folder to keep things organised, and bring it to every lesson. Below are examples of sheets I have created for other students. I can figure out a song during the lesson time, but it’s better if you request a song at least a few days beforehand, so I have time to learn the song and prepare your printouts. I can also provide photos, video, and audio if necessary.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?
Lessons cancelled within 24 hours must be paid for and cannot be rescheduled.
Lessons cancelled with more than 24 hours notice can be rescheduled or skipped at no additional charge.
